Using Art to Help Your Children and Teens Heal

Children and teens are often told to come to counseling by their parents for a variety of issues and reasons. The problem is, often times the family system that the child or teen comes from is not looked at as part of the overall treatment approach. That is why at Southwest Florida Christian Counseling we require our parents to attend counseling with the therapist at least every couple of months and also fill out their own paperwork. Research shows if you don't address the marriage, parenting styles, conflict in the family etc., it can have a negative impact on the child or teen's presenting problems. In addition, developmentally teens are in a stage where peers are more important, and they feel pressured to go talk to a counselor, who they don't know and sometimes feel identified as the problem in the family. We have found that including parents in treatment and using a non directive approach to treatment with children and teens such, as art therapy, is much more effective and respectful of the developmental stage your child or teen is at.
